Creative/Cultural Mapping Study

At its broadest, culture can be defined as a set of distinctive spiritual, material, intellectual and emotional features of society or a social group, that encompasses, not only art and literature, but lifestyles, ways of living together, value systems, traditions and beliefs (UNESCO, 2001).

To understand what is meant when we refer to the cultural and creative industries the international framework of ‘cultural domains’ adopted by UNESCO are accepted as the standard definition. The cultural domains include:

    • Cultural and natural heritage (including museums and historic places),
    • performance and celebration (including music, performance arts festivals and events),
    • visual arts and craft (including fine art, photography and craft),
    • audio-visual and interactive media (including film, television and radio, gaming, apps, web, animation and social media),
    • and design and creative (including fashion, jewellery, furniture, advertising and architecture).

In December 2015, the Tasmanian State Government released a Cultural and Creative Industries Strategy, which recognises the importance of Tasmania’s cultural sector and outlines a number of strategies to support its future growth.

As part of this Strategy and the Government’s commitment to developing the sector, the Tasmanian Creative Industries has been working in partnership with the Department of State Growth to develop two research programs that will help define and analyse our cultural sector.

The Creative /Cultural Mapping Study & Research Program aims to:

  • raise the profile of the creative / cultural sector in the Tasmanian community, including other industry sectors and across government
  • enable targeted, streamlined, evidence-based policy and actions that will support sustainable growth in the cultural sector
  • provide significant data and representations of the nature and structure of the Tasmanian Creative and Cultural Industries.
  • Provide significant data as to the actual and perceived networks and context that the CCI operates within both locally and nationally

This research will examine the relationships between the creative sectors and better understand how they add value to other sectors within the broad Tasmanian cultural ecology. Through this regional analysis, we hope to define the uniqueness of the Tasmanian sector, rather than impose a generic model of what Creative Industries should look like.

While this research cannot be totally comprehensive, it will provide insights and information to assist Tasmania’s cultural sector to develop and advocate.  We envisage that this research will not only be useful for the sector, but will support policy-makers to test and measure future strategies and investment.

The scope of the research program is to:

  • Analyse and present the size, economic contribution and relationships of the Tasmanian Cultural and Creative industries and economies with other state based sectors through the analysis of extant industry, ATO and ABS data.
  • Provide comparative analysis where possible with other jurisdictions (be it geographical or sector based).
  • To provide a geographical and demographic representation of the Tasmanian Cultural economies and its participants.

Undertake primary research, through interviews with selected sector participants, to validate extant data and analysis and generate new lines of inquiry and further research.
